Seventh Sunday of Easter. Text: John 17:20-26. Sermon: “I Ask” John Hilley, preaching. Music by Nate Strasser.

Each year the Gospel reading for the Seventh Sunday of Easter is taken from Jesus’ great prayer in John 17, where he prays for his disciples. Jesus invites us into what Raymond Brown describes as a "heavenly family conversation" between himself and God.

This prayer, like Jesus’ other prayers (John 11:41-42 and 12:27-28), is meant to be overheard by us. It witnesses to Jesus’ return to God and to his deep love for his followers. Everything he has he now gives to us, as he is returning back to God.

How powerful it is to know that Jesus has prayed to God on our behalf! There is no one for whom Jesus did not pray on his last night. Like the prayer of a parent overhead by the child for whom one intercedes, what this prayer reveals is Jesus’ deep love for the disciples.

Community service & mission outreach are our passions.

“I am with you to deliver you, says the Lord.”
—Jeremiah 1:8

Take Me to the Water

We are living through a time when all the stories the larger culture tells us about ourselves are being rewritten: the story of what the United States is; what it means to be a man or a woman; what it means to be a child; what it means to love oneself or other people. And what it means to be the church. Some say the church is being dismantled; others say the church is aging out, no longer relevant. Regardless of our assessment of the church, we are all looking for what can be a comfort and a guide. In this episode Pastor John touches upon what is core to the church while acknowledging its pitfalls and of the Spirit of God that names our true identity and addresses our spiritual hunger. That has us going to the water’s edge as we follow Jesus to the Jordan River (Mark 1). This episode features a medley of river-based themes (“River to Pray”) and “Into the Jordan” (Briana Tyson, vocalist).
